In Sega’s 1986 arcade game Out Run, who directed the game’s development?

The story behind the answer

Yu Suzuki directed the development of Sega’s 1986 arcade racing game Out Run.

Suzuki designed Out Run around the fantasy of driving a Ferrari Testarossa through attractive scenery with a passenger beside the player. Rather than presenting a single fixed race, the game offered branching routes, allowing players to choose different landscapes and endings. This structure helped make each playthrough feel less repetitive than a conventional circuit race.

Out Run became one of Sega’s signature arcade titles and is closely associated with Suzuki’s work during Sega’s influential 1980s arcade period. Its large cabinet, steering wheel, force-feedback features, music selection, and moving seat were important parts of the experience. The game’s cabinet design varied by market and location, but the driving concept remained recognizable.

Out Run is sometimes confused with later Sega racers such as Daytona USA, which was developed by a different team and appeared years later. Suzuki also directed other major Sega arcade projects, including Hang-On and Virtua Fighter.
