Opa-Opa is the player-controlled spacecraft in Sega’s 1986 arcade game Fantasy Zone.
Fantasy Zone is a colorful side-scrolling shooter with a distinctive pastel presentation. Opa-Opa travels through open-ended stages, destroys generators, collects coins, and buys upgrades such as stronger weapons, engines, and defensive equipment. The player must defeat the stage’s major boss after eliminating the required generators.
Opa-Opa is designed with small wings and a rounded body, making the craft look quite different from the angular ships common in earlier shooters. The character also became a recurring Sega mascot and appeared in other Sega games.
A common mix-up is calling Opa-Opa a conventional spaceship. Fantasy Zone presents the vehicle as a living, character-like craft, and later games further developed its personality and family connections. Its name is specifically associated with the Fantasy Zone protagonist.
