In Scarface, Tony Montana’s business partner and close friend is Manny Ribera.
Manny, played by Steven Bauer, arrives in Miami with Tony after the two men leave Cuba. He helps Tony enter the drug trade and becomes an important member of Tony’s organization. Their friendship later deteriorates as Tony’s ambition, paranoia, and violent behavior grow.
Manny’s relationship with Tony is also tied to Tony’s family. Manny falls in love with Tony’s sister Gina, a relationship Tony opposes because of his possessiveness and desire to control her life. Their conflict contributes directly to the film’s tragic final act.
Brian De Palma directed Scarface, released in 1983, with a screenplay by Oliver Stone. Al Pacino played Tony Montana. Manny is sometimes confused with Frank Lopez, who is Tony’s employer and later rival, not his closest lifelong partner.
