In RoboCop, Alex Murphy protects Detroit as the cyborg police officer RoboCop.
The 1987 film is set in a near-future Detroit suffering from severe crime and economic decline. The fictional corporation Omni Consumer Products, or OCP, has taken a major role in municipal services and proposes replacing the old city with a planned development called Delta City. RoboCop is created through an OCP program after police officer Alex Murphy is murdered while on duty.
Peter Weller plays Murphy, whose surviving body is combined with mechanical components and programmed directives. His patrols turn him into a symbol of law enforcement while the story questions corporate power, privatization, identity, and the meaning of justice. Detroit’s industrial image and real economic history strongly influence the film’s atmosphere.
Some scenes were filmed in Dallas, Texas, and other locations, which can cause confusion about the setting. The story itself clearly identifies the police officer’s jurisdiction as Detroit. RoboCop’s city is therefore Detroit, even though the production did not shoot every scene there.
