In Roald Dahl’s novel The Great Glass Elevator, what does the elevator travel into after leaving the chocolate factory?

The story behind the answer

In Roald Dahl’s The Great Glass Elevator, the elevator travels into space after leaving Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

The story begins immediately after Charlie Bucket, Willy Wonka and Charlie’s family enter the Great Glass Elevator. Instead of descending normally, Wonka sends it upward and into orbit, where the travelers encounter an American space hotel and a dangerous group of creatures called Vermicious Knids.

The novel was published in 1972 as a sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It expands the original book’s factory-centered setting into a much broader science-fiction adventure.

The title is sometimes mistaken for the name of a film sequel. Unlike Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Great Glass Elevator has not received a major feature-film adaptation.
