In "Revenge of the Sith", what does Padme die from?

In “Revenge of the Sith,” Padmé dies from heartbreak after Anakin Skywalker’s fall to the dark side. The film’s medical droid says she is physically healthy but has lost the will to live after giving birth.

Padmé has just witnessed Anakin become Darth Vader, attack her, and betray everything they once believed in. Obi-Wan brings her to the medical facility on Polis Massa, where she delivers twins, Luke and Leia, but then rapidly weakens.

The droid cannot identify a conventional injury or illness. Its explanation—“she has lost the will to live”—makes emotional despair the stated cause of death. “Heartbreak” is the common trivia shorthand for that idea.

Some viewers argue that Anakin’s Force choke, the trauma of childbirth, or the shock of his transformation also contributed. Those possibilities are part of the debate, but the movie presents Padmé’s death symbolically: Anakin is transformed into Vader as Padmé dies, while her hope effectively passes to their children.
