In "Raiders of the Lost Ark," Indy nearly eats poisoned dates. The danger appears in the Cairo sequence, when Indiana Jones reaches toward a bowl of dates and Sallah stops him after noticing a dead monkey nearby.
The scene establishes that the monkey had eaten one of the poisoned dates. The poison was presumably intended for Indy by agents working with the Nazis, who were trying to eliminate him while searching for the Ark of the Covenant. Sallah's quick intervention saves Jones before he swallows one.
The moment is easy to confuse with the later dinner scene in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," where Indy and his companions are served bizarre-looking dishes at a palace banquet. That famous sequence features unfamiliar foods and is played for comic shock, but the poisoned fruit in "Raiders" is specifically dates.
The scene also reinforces the film's Cairo setting, where dates would have been a familiar regional food rather than an exotic prop.
