In "Raiders of the Lost Ark," the ship that transports the Ark of the Covenant is the Bantu Wind. It is a tramp steamer commanded by Captain Simon Katanga, and Indiana Jones hides aboard it after the Nazis seize the vessel.
The ship appears near the end of the film's central chase. After Indy recovers the Ark from the Well of Souls, the German forces capture it and load it onto a submarine. Indy follows the submarine and eventually reaches the Bantu Wind, where he conceals himself in the cargo hold. The Ark is then stored aboard the ship, producing an eerie humming sound that alarms the crew.
Bantu Wind is often remembered simply as the ship from the Ark escape, but it is also significant because Captain Katanga helps Indy survive the Nazi pursuit. The vessel is fictional, although the film's maritime scenes were shot in La Rochelle, France, using a submarine associated with the production of "Das Boot."
