In Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, in which U.S. state is most of the story set?

The story behind the answer

Most of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight is set in Wyoming.

The story takes place after the American Civil War, when a stagecoach carrying bounty hunter John Ruth and his prisoner Daisy Domergue is forced to stop during a blizzard. The travelers seek shelter at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a remote lodge in Wyoming’s mountains.

The isolated setting turns the film into a locked-room mystery and chamber western. Several strangers arrive at the lodge, and Ruth suspects that one or more of them may be connected to Domergue. Much of the plot unfolds through interrogation, conflicting stories and shifting alliances rather than travel across a broad landscape.

The film was released in 2015 and was shot in the 70 mm Ultra Panavision format. Wyoming can be confused with neighboring Rocky Mountain states such as Colorado and Montana, but the film’s principal setting and title-card geography identify Wyoming.
