Gordon Liu plays Johnny Mo in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Volume 1.
Johnny Mo is the commander of the Crazy 88, the large group of sword fighters who confront the Bride in the House of Blue Leaves sequence. Liu’s role is relatively brief but memorable because Tarantino cast him in two different parts across the Kill Bill films. In Volume 1, he is Johnny Mo; in Volume 2, he plays Pai Mei, the Bride’s demanding martial-arts teacher.
Liu was already famous for Hong Kong martial-arts cinema, especially his work with Shaw Brothers. His casting reflects Tarantino’s admiration for Asian genre films and the influence those films had on Kill Bill’s choreography, visual style, and revenge narrative.
Sonny Chiba, another martial-arts star, appears as Hattori Hanzo, the swordsmith. That distinction is a frequent source of confusion: Chiba is Hanzo, while Liu is Johnny Mo and Pai Mei.
