In Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, Calvin Candie owns the plantation called Candyland.
Candyland is a large Mississippi plantation where Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, operates a brutal slaveholding estate. Django and Dr. King Schultz travel there while pretending to be interested in purchasing a highly skilled fighter. Their real objective is to locate and free Broomhilda von Schaft, Django’s wife.
The name is deliberately ironic. “Candyland” sounds playful and harmless, while the plantation represents the violence and exploitation at the center of the film’s antebellum setting. The estate’s scenes also introduce Candie’s interest in mandingo fighting and his power over enslaved people.
Viewers sometimes mistake the name for a description of Candie’s residence or for the title of a fictional game. In the film, Candyland is the plantation itself, and “Candie” is the surname of its owner, Calvin Candie.
