In Pixar’s Cars, which legendary racer becomes the Hudson Hornet?

The story behind the answer

The legendary racer known as the Hudson Hornet in Pixar’s Cars is Doc Hudson.

Doc is the town’s respected judge and physician in Radiator Springs, but his past is revealed when McQueen learns that he was once a champion race car. He won three Piston Cups before a crash ended his competitive career and left him frustrated with the racing world.

The character is modeled on the real Hudson Hornet, a celebrated American automobile associated with early stock-car racing. In the film, Doc’s history gives McQueen an important lesson: public success can disappear quickly, while a racer’s identity and relationships can last much longer.

Doc Hudson was voiced by Paul Newman, whose own reputation as an actor and racing enthusiast added resonance to the role. Newman died in 2008, and Cars 2 includes a dedication to him. The Hudson Hornet name refers to the character’s racing identity, not to a separate person in the film.
