In Pixar’s Cars, what nickname is given to Strip Weathers?

The story behind the answer

Strip Weathers is nicknamed “The King” in Pixar’s Cars.

The King is a veteran Piston Cup racer and one of Lightning McQueen’s championship rivals. His character is based on the visual image and sporting reputation of a highly successful, respected stock-car champion. Richard Petty, a real NASCAR driver, provides the character’s voice.

The nickname distinguishes Strip Weathers from Doc Hudson, whose racing title is the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. Both characters are older racing figures, but they have different identities and roles: The King remains an active competitor at the start of Cars, while Doc has retired and lives in Radiator Springs.

The King’s plot role also emphasizes sportsmanship. Lightning initially focuses on beating both The King and Chick Hicks, but the film’s conclusion shows him making a notably unselfish decision during the final race. That choice changes how the other racers and the public view him.
