In Pixar’s Cars, Doc Hudson won three Piston Cups during his racing career.
Doc is introduced as the town doctor of Radiator Springs, but his past is revealed through memories and conversations. Before becoming a local physician, he was a famous race car known as the Hudson Hornet. His racing career ended after a serious crash and a painful experience with the racing world’s changing attitude toward older drivers.
The three Piston Cups are an important part of Doc’s history because they establish him as more than an ordinary retired car. They also explain why he understands Lightning McQueen’s racing ambitions and why he initially distrusts the modern racing circuit. Lightning eventually learns that Doc’s experience is valuable, even though Doc does not want to return to public racing.
This number is sometimes confused with Lightning McQueen’s achievements in the first film. Lightning is chasing his first Piston Cup in Cars, while Doc’s three victories happened years earlier. The fictional trophy is named after the real-world motorsport term “Piston Cup,” but it is not a real NASCAR championship.
