In Norse mythology, at the base of which tree do the Norns reside?

In Norse mythology, the Norns reside at the base of Yggdrasil, the immense sacred tree at the center of the cosmos. Their dwelling is associated with Urðarbrunnr, the Well of Urðr, one of the wells beside Yggdrasil’s roots. From this location, the Norns shape or determine the destinies of gods and humans.

The three best-known Norns are Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld, whose names are commonly interpreted as aspects of what has happened, what is happening, and what is yet to come. They are not simply identical to the Greek Fates, although both groups are connected with the idea of destiny. Norse sources also mention other Norns, suggesting that fate was not limited to a single trio.

The Norns care for Yggdrasil by drawing water from Urðarbrunnr and applying it to the tree, along with mud from the well, to prevent its branches from drying or decaying. Yggdrasil is therefore both their home and a living framework holding the Nine Worlds together.
