In Noah’s Ark, Noah was the ark’s builder and leader in the Genesis story.
Genesis presents Noah as a righteous man who receives divine instructions to build the ark before the Flood. He is told how to construct it, what provisions to bring, and which members of his household will enter. Noah follows those instructions and later releases birds to assess the condition of the land.
The narrative names Noah’s wife, his three sons, and his sons’ wives as the human occupants, but it does not give the wife’s name. Noah is also identified as the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, whose descendants receive important roles in the biblical genealogical tradition.
Noah is not the builder in every flood story from the ancient Near East. In the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, the corresponding survivor is Utnapishtim, while the Atrahasis tradition names Atrahasis. Those related stories are a common source of confusion when comparing flood narratives.
