In Noah’s Ark, what sign did God establish as a covenant after the Flood?

The story behind the answer

In Noah’s Ark, God established the rainbow as the sign of the covenant after the Flood. Genesis 9:12–17 presents the rainbow as a visible reminder of God’s covenant with Noah, his descendants, and every living creature.

The covenant promises that a flood will not again destroy all flesh on earth. The text connects the rainbow with the clouds: whenever the rainbow appears, God is described as remembering the covenant. This makes the sign broader than a private promise to Noah alone; animals and the earth are also included in the stated agreement.

The rainbow covenant occurs after Noah leaves the Ark and builds an altar. It is therefore distinct from the olive leaf brought by the dove, which belongs to the earlier search for receding waters. The biblical passage does not say that God created rainbows for the first time, but identifies one as the covenant sign.
