Namco’s 1980 arcade game Pac-Man has four ghosts that chase the player through its maze.
The four ghosts are Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde. They are not identical enemies: each has distinct movement behavior, which gives the maze a mixture of direct pursuit, ambush and unpredictable positioning. This individual behavior was a major part of Pac-Man’s design and helped make the game feel more strategic than a simple reflex challenge.
The ghosts are often identified by color as well as name: red Blinky, pink Pinky, cyan Inky and orange Clyde. Power Pellets temporarily allow Pac-Man to eat them, but the ghosts return after the effect ends. The four-ghost structure remained one of the most recognizable features of the original arcade game.
