In 'Naked and Afraid', how long must contestants generally survive in the wilderness?

The story behind the answer

In Naked and Afraid, contestants generally must survive in the wilderness for 21 days.

The Discovery Channel series places two strangers in a challenging natural environment with no clothing and limited supplies. Each participant is usually allowed to bring one personal survival item, such as a knife, fire starter, or cooking vessel. They must find water, obtain food, build shelter, and manage the physical demands of the location.

The standard challenge lasts 21 days, although special episodes and spin-offs can use different durations or rules. Participants attempt to reach an extraction point at the end of the period. Medical teams and production staff remain nearby for safety, even though the contestants are expected to manage their own daily survival.

The series premiered in 2013. Its format is different from Alone, in which contestants are generally separated from one another and film themselves. Naked and Afraid emphasizes cooperation between two people as well as survival skill.
