In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Snake’s mentor and final opponent is known as The Boss.
The Boss is a legendary soldier who founded the Cobra Unit and trained Naked Snake. At the beginning of Operation Snake Eater, she defects to the Soviet Union, apparently taking American military technology with her. Snake is ordered to eliminate her and prove that the United States did not authorize her defection.
Her relationship with Snake drives the game’s emotional and political story. Their final battle is both a military confrontation and a test of loyalty, sacrifice, and the meaning of patriotism.
The Boss is sometimes confused with Volgin, the Soviet colonel who controls Groznyj Grad. Volgin is a major antagonist, but The Boss is Snake’s mentor and the person he must defeat at the mission’s conclusion.
