MegaMan.EXE is the digital partner operated by Lan Hikari, the series’ human protagonist. In the Battle Network universe, people interact with computers and the internet through specialized digital avatars called NetNavis, which are controlled through handheld devices known as PETs. Lan uses his PET to send MegaMan.EXE into networks, where he battles viruses and investigates cybercrime.

The name deliberately connects this character to the classic Mega Man, but the two belong to different continuities. Battle Network shifts the focus from robot warfare to networking, cyberspace, and real-time tactical battles.
