In Mega Man 3, Dr. Light and Dr. Wily build the peace-keeping robot Gamma.
The project begins after Wily claims to have abandoned his plans for world domination. Gamma is powered by eight energy crystals, but Robot Masters assigned to mining sites go berserk and steal them. Mega Man must recover the crystals before Wily takes control of the project.
The supposed partnership eventually proves deceptive: Wily steals Gamma and retreats to his fortress. Mega Man defeats the robot during the final confrontation, destroying the machine rather than allowing it to be used for conquest.
Gamma is sometimes confused with the game’s Robot Masters, such as Shadow Man or Snake Man. Those are boss enemies, while Gamma is the large peace-keeping machine at the center of the plot. Mega Man 3 was released for the NES in 1990 and also introduced several enduring series elements, including Rush and Proto Man.
