Martin Scorsese’s The Departed won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 2007 Academy Awards.
The crime thriller was released in 2006 and follows an undercover police officer and a police mole inside the Massachusetts State Police. Its ensemble cast included Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg.
The film was Scorsese’s first Best Picture winner and his first Best Director winner. It also received Oscars for Scorsese’s direction, William Monahan’s adapted screenplay, and film editing.
The Departed is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong crime film Infernal Affairs. A common mix-up is confusing its Best Picture success with Goodfellas, another acclaimed Scorsese crime film that received major nominations but did not win that award.
