In Mario Party, coins are the basic currency used to purchase stars. During a board game, players typically spend 20 coins when they reach the star’s location and choose to buy it from the host character.
Coins can be gained or lost in several ways. Players usually earn them by performing well in the minigame played at the end of each turn, while blue spaces generally award coins and red spaces generally remove them. Some board events, characters, and minigames can also change a player’s coin total.
Coins are not the same as stars: coins help players buy stars and can decide the winner in certain ties, while stars are the main objective. The original Mario Party also includes special events involving coin exchanges, and Boo can steal coins from another player for free. Gems, points, and rings are not the standard currency used to buy stars in the series.
