In many Catholic countries, Father's Day is celebrated on which saint's feast day?

The story behind the answer

In many Catholic countries, Father's Day is celebrated on St. Joseph's Day, the feast day of Saint Joseph.

St. Joseph is traditionally recognized in Christianity as the husband of Mary and the foster or earthly father of Jesus. Because he is associated with family care, work, responsibility, and fatherhood, his feast became a natural occasion for honoring fathers. The principal feast of Saint Joseph is observed on March 19 in the Roman Catholic calendar.

This tradition is especially visible in parts of Southern Europe and Latin America. Italy calls the celebration Festa di San Giuseppe, while Spain and Portugal also have strong cultural connections between fatherhood and Saint Joseph's feast. In some places, the religious observance remains central; elsewhere, Father's Day has shifted toward a more secular celebration on a different date, often the third Sunday in June.

A common mix-up is St. Joseph's Day with the separate feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, observed on May 1. The traditional Father's Day association is March 19, not May 1.
