Answer
Wind Fish
In Link’s Awakening, what is the name of the sleeping creature? It is the Wind Fish.
The Wind Fish is Koholint Island’s guardian and the mysterious presence at the center of Link’s quest. After Link is shipwrecked, an owl tells him that the Wind Fish is sleeping inside a giant egg atop Mount Tamaranch and must be awakened if Link is to return home.
To open the egg, Link must recover eight Instruments of the Sirens from Koholint’s dungeons and play the Ballad of the Wind Fish. The adventure gradually reveals that Koholint is part of the Wind Fish’s dream, explaining why familiar Zelda characters and creatures appear in unusual roles.
The Wind Fish should not be confused with the Ocean King from Phantom Hourglass or with creatures such as Valoo and the Great Deku Tree. Once Link defeats the Nightmare and awakens the Wind Fish, Koholint’s dream world disappears, while Link awakens at sea beneath the flying Wind Fish.
