In League of Legends, what are the playable characters called?

In League of Legends, the playable characters are called champions.

Each champion is a distinct playable character with a unique visual design, background, role, and set of abilities. During a match, a player selects one champion and develops that character by gaining experience, earning gold, buying items, and participating in fights.

Champions are designed for different play styles. Some specialize in absorbing damage, others deal sustained or burst damage, protect teammates, control areas, or provide healing and utility. Common role labels include top, jungle, mid, attack damage carry, and support, though champions can sometimes be used in unexpected positions.

“Heroes” is a common term in other multiplayer games, but it is not League’s official terminology. Avatars and agents are also incorrect here: an avatar usually means a player’s representation, while “agent” is strongly associated with Riot’s separate game Valorant.
