In Lawrence of Arabia, which desert crossing earns T. E. Lawrence the nickname “El Aurens”?

The story behind the answer

In Lawrence of Arabia, T. E. Lawrence crosses the Nefud Desert and becomes associated with the name “El Aurens.”

David Lean’s 1962 epic shows Lawrence leading Arab forces across the supposedly impassable Nefud during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire. The crossing allows the force to attack Aqaba from the landward side, where its defenses are oriented toward the sea.

The film draws on Lawrence’s memoir, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, but it compresses events and heightens the drama. The Nefud is a real desert in northern Saudi Arabia, characterized by red sand dunes and harsh conditions. It is distinct from the enormous Rub’ al Khali farther south.

Peter O’Toole plays Lawrence, while Omar Sharif plays Sherif Ali. The film won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and remains one of cinema’s most influential desert war epics.
