In Konami’s 1983 arcade game Track & Field, how many events are included in the standard six-event competition?

The story behind the answer

In Konami’s 1983 arcade game Track & Field, the standard competition contains six events.

Track & Field is an Olympic-sports arcade game that uses two running buttons and an action button. Players rapidly alternate the running buttons to build speed, then use the action button for jumps, throws or other event-specific actions. Its simple controls made it especially popular for competitive multiplayer sessions.

The six standard events are the 100-metre dash, long jump, javelin throw, 110-metre hurdles, hammer throw and high jump. Players must qualify in each event by reaching a target score, distance or time. Failing to qualify can end the run, so the game combines button speed with timing and precision.

Track & Field is sometimes confused with later Olympic arcade titles that added more events or used different control layouts. Konami followed it with Hyper Sports, which expanded the sports-game formula and presented a separate group of events. The original Track & Field’s six-event structure is therefore a specific feature of its standard arcade competition.
