Konami’s arcade game Frogger was first released in 1981.
Konami developed Frogger and licensed it to Sega/Gremlin for distribution in North America. Its simple objective is to guide frogs across hazards including traffic, a river, logs, turtles, and alligators. Players must reach five home slots at the top of the screen without losing all their frogs.
Frogger became one of the best-known arcade games of the early 1980s. Its challenge comes from timing rather than direct combat: traffic moves horizontally, while river objects move in both directions. The game also became a major home-console and computer success through numerous ports.
A common mix-up is confusing Frogger’s arcade release with later home versions. The original coin-operated game appeared in 1981; many ports and sequels followed afterward.
