Yavanna creates the Two Trees of Valinor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion.
The Two Trees are Telperion, the Silver Tree, and Laurelin, the Golden Tree. They grow in Valinor and provide light before the Sun and Moon exist. Their light alternates, creating the Years of the Trees, an era that predates the awakening of the Sun and Moon.
Yavanna is one of the Valar and is especially associated with growing things, plants, and the natural world. She creates the Trees after the Valar establish Valinor, and their radiance becomes central to the history of the Elves. The light of the Trees is later preserved in the Silmarils made by Fëanor.
The Trees are destroyed by Ungoliant and Melkor, although their final fruit and flower become the sources of the Sun and Moon. Varda, another Vala, blesses the light, but she does not create the Trees. This distinction is important when separating the roles of Tolkien’s Valar.
