In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Frodo must carry the One Ring to Mount Doom. The Ring was forged by Sauron in the fires of Orodruin, the volcano also called Mount Doom, and it can be destroyed only in the fire where it was made.
The Ring contains much of Sauron’s power and is designed to dominate the other Rings of Power. Its influence corrupts and tempts its bearers, making the journey dangerous even when the bearer intends to resist it. Frodo receives it from Bilbo, who found it during the events of The Hobbit.
Mount Doom is located in Mordor, Sauron’s stronghold. Frodo’s quest is not simply a journey to a distant landmark: it is a race against the Ring’s power and Sauron’s search for it. The One Ring should not be confused with the lesser rings, such as the Rings of the Elves, Dwarves, and Men.
