In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, what is the name of the tower where Frodo is held after Shelob’s attack?

The story behind the answer

The Tower of Cirith Ungol is where Frodo is held after Shelob’s attack in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The tower guards a pass into Mordor and stands above the tunnel inhabited by Shelob. After Sam finds Frodo apparently dead, Orcs carry Frodo’s body to the tower. Frodo is actually paralyzed rather than dead, and he wakes to discover that the Orcs have taken his clothing and are arguing over his mithril coat.

Sam uses the Ring’s power to enter the tower and rescues Frodo. The tower is controlled by rival Orc groups, and their conflict helps the rescue succeed. It should not be confused with Orthanc, Saruman’s tower in Isengard, or Barad-dûr, Sauron’s fortress. Minas Morgul is another major fortress nearby, but it is not the place where Frodo is imprisoned.
