In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, what is the name of the forest where Treebeard lives?

The story behind the answer

Treebeard lives in Fangorn Forest in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Fangorn lies near the southern end of the Misty Mountains, close to Isengard and Rohan. It is an ancient woodland inhabited by Ents, the tree-shepherds who guard and care for trees. Treebeard, whose Entish name is Fangorn, is the oldest of the Ents encountered by the story’s main characters.

Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard after escaping from the Orcs who captured them. Their account of Saruman’s destruction of the surrounding forests helps persuade the Ents to march on Isengard. Fangorn is distinct from Mirkwood, the great forest in the north, and from the Old Forest near the Shire. Tolkien’s forests are not interchangeable settings: each has its own history, inhabitants, and relationship to the natural world.
