The town destroyed by Smaug in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is Lake-town.
Lake-town, also called Esgaroth, is a settlement built on wooden platforms in Long Lake, south of the Lonely Mountain. Its people trade with nearby regions and live in a strategic position between the mountain and the forest of Mirkwood.
After Bilbo and the Dwarves escape from the Elvenking’s halls in barrels, they travel to Lake-town. The town’s Master allows Thorin’s company to continue toward Erebor, partly because the Dwarves’ arrival awakens hopes of the return of the King under the Mountain.
Smaug later flies from Erebor to attack Lake-town. Bard, a descendant of the rulers of Dale, shoots the dragon with the Black Arrow. Smaug’s fall destroys much of the settlement, but the survivors rebuild elsewhere. Dale is also ruined during the attack, but the town directly attacked and devastated by Smaug is Lake-town.
