In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, what is the name of the mountain kingdom reclaimed by Thorin Oakenshield?

The story behind the answer

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Thorin Oakenshield seeks to reclaim the mountain kingdom of Erebor.

Erebor is also known as the Lonely Mountain. It was the prosperous kingdom of the Dwarves of Durin’s folk until the dragon Smaug attacked, drove out the inhabitants, and claimed their treasure. Thorin, the heir of King Thrór and grandson of King Thrór’s successor Thráin, leads the quest to recover the mountain.

The company’s journey includes Bilbo Baggins, thirteen Dwarves, and the Wizard Gandalf. After Smaug is killed, the treasure becomes the cause of a new dispute involving the Dwarves, Men from Lake-town, and Elves of Mirkwood. This leads to the Battle of the Five Armies near the mountain.

Erebor should not be confused with Moria, another famous Dwarven realm. Moria lies beneath the Misty Mountains and is abandoned after the awakening of the Balrog, while Erebor is the Lonely Mountain east of Mirkwood and Dale.
