Manwë is the chief of the Valar in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology.
The Valar are powerful spiritual beings who entered Arda, the world of Tolkien’s creation, to shape and govern it according to the purposes of Eru Ilúvatar. Manwë is associated especially with air, wind, and the skies. He dwells on Taniquetil, the highest mountain of Aman, with Varda, who is described as his spouse.
Manwë is regarded as the greatest in authority among the Valar, but Tolkien does not present him as a tyrant. He is devoted to understanding and carrying out the will of Eru. His closest connection is with the substance of the world’s atmosphere and with the great eagles, who are linked to him.
Manwë is sometimes confused with Morgoth because both are among the most powerful beings in the early mythology. Their roles are opposite: Manwë remains faithful to Eru, while Morgoth rebels and becomes the first Dark Lord. Sauron later serves Morgoth rather than replacing him in the ancient hierarchy.
