Treebeard is described as the oldest Ent in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology.
Also called Fangorn, Treebeard leads the Ents who live in Fangorn Forest. He meets Merry and Pippin after they escape from the Orcs, and their conversation helps persuade the Ents to act against Saruman.
Ents are ancient tree-like beings created to protect the trees. Tolkien’s account connects their awakening with the loss of the Entwives, whose disappearance leaves the Ents without their female counterparts.
Treebeard’s slow speech and deliberate decisions are important features of the story, but he is not merely a talking tree. He is a shepherd of trees with his own language, memories, and concern for the destruction caused by Isengard.
