Telperion and Laurelin
Answer
Telperion and Laurelin
In J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology, the two trees that illuminated Valinor are Telperion and Laurelin.
Telperion is the silver tree, while Laurelin is the golden tree. They grow in Valinor, the blessed realm of the Valar, and their light precedes the later light of the Sun and Moon. The trees do not shine simultaneously in an ordinary day-night cycle; their periods of light overlap, creating a distinctive sequence of silver and gold illumination.
The giant spider Ungoliant and the rebel Vala Melkor destroy the Two Trees. Their last surviving light is preserved in the Silmarils, jewels created by Fëanor. A single fruit and flower from the trees also become the sources of the Moon and Sun.
Telperion is also associated with silver light and Laurelin with gold, but the trees are not themselves the Sun and Moon. They belong to the mythology of the Years of the Trees, before the First Age.
