In J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology, Angband is the fortress where Morgoth is defeated in the War of Wrath.
Angband is Morgoth’s great stronghold in the north-west of Middle-earth during the First Age. It is ruled by Morgoth, the original Dark Lord, and defended by his armies of Orcs, Balrogs, dragons, and other creatures. The fortress becomes the center of Morgoth’s wars against the Elves and the Edain.
The War of Wrath is fought at the end of the First Age after Eärendil reaches Valinor and asks the Valar for aid. The conflict devastates much of Beleriand, and Morgoth is finally captured and cast beyond the Walls of the World. Angband should not be confused with Utumno, Morgoth’s earlier fortress in the far north, or Barad-dûr, Sauron’s fortress in Mordor during the Second and Third Ages.
