In J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology, what is the name of Gandalf’s horse?

The story behind the answer

Gandalf’s horse in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology is named Shadowfax.

Shadowfax is a great horse of Rohan and is described as the chief of the Mearas, the exceptionally intelligent horse lineage associated with the Rohirrim. King Théoden eventually allows Gandalf to ride him, and the horse becomes the wizard’s principal mount.

The name reflects Shadowfax’s remarkable speed and his gray or silver appearance. He carries Gandalf swiftly across long distances, including the journey to Minas Tirith before the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Tolkien presents him as unusually perceptive and capable of understanding speech.

Shadowfax is distinct from Brego, Théoden’s horse in the film adaptations, and from Asfaloth, the horse associated with Glorfindel in Tolkien’s book. Bill the Pony is also a separate animal who travels with the Fellowship for part of the journey.
