In J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, the city ruled by Denethor is Minas Tirith. It is the capital of Gondor and the principal setting of the great battle in The Return of the King.
Minas Tirith stands beside the eastern edge of the White Mountains. The city is built in seven ascending levels, each protected by defensive walls, and the Citadel occupies the highest level. The White Tower rises within the Citadel.
Denethor II serves as the city’s ruling Steward rather than a king. His sons Boromir and Faramir are central characters, and Gandalf takes command of the city’s defence when Denethor loses hope.
Minas Tirith was formerly called Minas Anor, meaning Tower of the Sun. Minas Morgul, once called Minas Ithil, is its enemy city, so the similar names can cause confusion. Osgiliath is another important Gondorian city, but it is not Denethor’s seat.
