Mount Doom is located in Mordor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Mordor is the dark land in the southeast of Middle-earth where Sauron establishes his main fortress and power. Mount Doom, also called Orodruin, stands within Mordor and is the volcanic place where the One Ring was forged. Because only its fires can destroy the Ring, Frodo and Sam must reach the mountain during the quest described in The Lord of the Rings.
Mordor is protected by difficult terrain and fortifications, including the mountain ranges of the Ered Lithui and Ephel Dúath. The land’s imagery combines volcanic destruction, military occupation, and the environmental damage caused by Sauron’s rule.
Gondor and Rohan are neighboring or allied realms that readers sometimes confuse with Mordor because major events occur in all three. Beleriand belongs mainly to the earlier history of the First Age and is not the setting of the Ring’s destruction.
