Answer
A short sword
In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, Bilbo Baggins named his short sword Sting.
Bilbo found the weapon in a troll-hoard during the journey described in The Hobbit. The sword was made by Elves in the First Age and had originally belonged to the hidden Elven city of Gondolin. Its small size made it appear more like a large knife to an ordinary human, but it was a sword for a hobbit.
Sting glowed blue when Orcs were near. Bilbo used it during his adventures, and later gave it to Frodo Baggins. Frodo carried Sting through much of The Lord of the Rings, including the journey to Mordor.
Readers sometimes call Sting simply a dagger because of its size, but Tolkien’s text and reference works identify it as a short sword. Its name is also distinct from Glamdring and Orcrist, the larger swords found in the same troll-hoard.
