In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, the Rohirrim’s kingdom is called Rohan.
Rohan is a realm of horse-lords in the northwest of Middle-earth. Its people are known as the Rohirrim, a name meaning roughly “horse-lords,” and their culture, warfare, and economy are closely tied to horses. The kingdom’s wide grasslands are often called the Riddermark.
Rohan plays a major role in The Lord of the Rings. Its capital is Edoras, where King Théoden rules from Meduseld. During the War of the Ring, Rohan comes under pressure from Saruman and later sends aid to Gondor at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
Rohan is sometimes confused with Gondor, the neighboring southern kingdom, because the two realms are closely allied. Tolkien based aspects of the Rohirrim’s language and heroic culture on Old English traditions, while their close relationship with horses gives the kingdom its distinctive identity.
