In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, what is the name of the cataclysm that destroyed Númenor?

The story behind the answer

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, the cataclysm that destroyed Númenor is called the Downfall of Númenor.

The event is recounted in “Akallabêth,” one of the major sections of The Silmarillion. Númenor was an island kingdom granted to Men after the War of Wrath, but its rulers became increasingly proud and resentful of the immortal Elves and the Ban imposed by the Valar.

King Ar-Pharazôn eventually sailed west with a great fleet in an attempt to challenge the Valar. In response, Eru Ilúvatar changed the shape of the world, and Númenor was overwhelmed and removed from the circles of the world.

The disaster is sometimes called the Atlantis story of Tolkien’s mythology, although its themes and details are distinct. Survivors led by Elendil reached Middle-earth and founded the realms of Arnor and Gondor.
