In J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, what is the capital city of Gondor?

The story behind the answer

The capital city of Gondor in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium is Minas Tirith.

Minas Tirith stands in the White Mountains and becomes Gondor's principal city after Osgiliath declines. Its name means Tower of Guard in Sindarin, and it was formerly called Minas Anor, meaning Tower of the Sun.

The city is built on seven levels rising up the side of a hill. Its defensive position and massive walls make it the chief stronghold of Gondor during the War of the Ring.

Minas Tirith is sometimes confused with Minas Morgul, another fortified city originally built by Gondor. Minas Morgul was captured by the forces of Sauron and became a dark enemy stronghold. Edoras, meanwhile, is the capital of Rohan, not Gondor.
