In Jojo Rabbit, which actor plays the imaginary Adolf Hitler?

The story behind the answer

Taika Waititi plays the imaginary Adolf Hitler in Jojo Rabbit.

Waititi also directed and co-wrote the 2019 film, adapting Christine Leunens’s 2004 novel Caging Skies. The story follows Johannes “Jojo” Betzler, a German boy whose imaginary friend is a comical version of Hitler during the final years of World War II.

The character is deliberately presented through a child’s distorted imagination rather than as a realistic historical portrait. This allows the film to satirize fascist propaganda and the absurdity of Nazi ideology while still showing the danger faced by Jewish people and others under the regime.

Waititi, who is of Māori and Jewish heritage, described the role as a way to confront Hitler through ridicule. Jojo Rabbit premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, and Thomasin McKenzie appear in other major roles.
