In J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world, the sport played on flying broomsticks is Quidditch.
Quidditch is a team game played in the air, with players riding broomsticks and trying to score through three different-sized hoops. A match also includes a Golden Snitch, a small flying ball pursued by the Seeker. In the books, catching the Snitch traditionally awards 150 points and usually ends the match, although it does not automatically determine the winner.
The sport appears throughout the Harry Potter novels and is played by school teams, professional clubs, and national sides. Hogwarts students compete for their house teams, making Quidditch one of the most visible parts of school life in the series.
Quidditch is sometimes confused with wizarding games such as Gobstones, which is a separate game, or with real-world adaptations played without flying. Rowling’s fictional rules inspired real-world ground-based versions, but the broomstick sport itself belongs to the wizarding setting.
