Iyar is the Hebrew month that follows Nisan in the Jewish calendar.
Iyar is the eighth month when months are counted from Tishrei for some religious purposes, but it is commonly called the second month when the year is counted from Nisan. It usually falls during April and May in the Gregorian calendar, although its exact dates shift because the Hebrew calendar is lunisolar.
The month includes several observances. Lag BaOmer occurs on the 18th of Iyar, and modern Jewish calendars also mark Yom HaAtzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim on dates that can fall in Iyar, depending on calendar rules and national practice.
A common confusion concerns the order of Hebrew months. Nisan is the first month in the biblical religious numbering, while Tishrei is the month of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Iyar therefore follows Nisan even though the calendar’s civil year begins in Tishrei.
